Hello Factory Two community!

I’m excited to kick off my first Factory Floor newsletter as Executive Director and even more excited about everything we have ahead of us this fall. September brings another full month of classes, programs, and opportunities to create and connect at Factory Two, and we’re also looking ahead to Make The Space, our annual celebration and fundraiser, happening Monday, October 19th. It’s one of our biggest nights of the year and a chance to bring together the people who make Factory Two such a special part of our community. There’s plenty more to come, but for now, take a look at what’s happening in the space this month, I hope to see you around!

Familiar Face promoted to Operations Manager:

Doc Shank has been at Factory Two since 2016, when he offered to work ten hours a week for a hundred dollars. Through a combination of poor boundaries and genuine affection for the place, he worked considerably more than that. He became the first person Factory Two ever put on salary, a fact he found out about while on a camping trip.

He is now Operations Manager and Technical Coordinator, which in practice means he owns every problem in the building that has a power cord attached to it, and several that do not. He built the new website which replaced four paid platforms. That sounds impressive right up until you learn he spent the launch weekend sleeping in the building on a cot.

Doc teaches the 3D printing class, runs the bench where donated computers are taken apart with more enthusiasm than ceremony, and once taught himself to make his own dentures rather than pay somebody else to do it, which tells you most of what you need to know. Thirty years in IT, the Army before that. The best thing he has ever photographed on the premises is a raccoon sitting on the railing at three in the morning, directly beneath the sign reading "Smile, you're on camera."

Now that the new website is up-and-running, we are switching our billing system to one that is also more clear and user-friendly. Please keep an eye out for an email with full instructions!
